Police: Inkster Mom Shot Teen Son After Argument

INKSTER (WWJ) -  Michigan State Police are investigating after they say a 17-year-old was shot by his mother at an Inkster apartment complex.

MSP First Lt. Michael Shaw said the two had gotten into an argument Thursday morning at their home in the Canterbury Woods Apartments in the 600 block of Tobin, in the area of Beech Daly and Avondale.

"During the argument the son had walked outside of the apartment and started to leave the area," Shaw said. "But, for whatever reason, he decided that he wanted to come back into the apartment complex and which time the mom fired one shot, striking the individual, the 17-year-old-in the body."

Shaw said the teen staggered outside where he was assisted by neighbors who called 911. He was taken by EMS to a local hospital in critical condition, and his mom was arrested.

Shaw said grabbing a gun is never a good way to settle an argument:

"Sometimes people have a tendency to overreact or get so mad that something happens," he told WWJ's Zahra Huber. "And when you have a firearm involved...you can't take a bullet back. Once it's fired out of that gun, that bullet has a mind of its own and it's going to go wherever physics takes it."

Shaw added that they're still looking into whether there have been any previous domestic violence calls to the home.

No names been released as an investigation continues.
