Riverview Teen Killed On Way Home From Fireworks Show
NEWPORT (WWJ) - The Fourth of July holiday got off to a tragic start in southeast Michigan, after a car full of teenagers was involved in a deadly crash on I-75.
Four friends were on their way home from a fireworks show in Monroe County around 11 p.m. Tuesday when the 19-year-old driver lost control of his car on northbound I-75 near Newport Road and struck the median.
Michigan State Police say 15-year-old Amanda James of Riverview, who was sitting in the rear passenger seat, was thrown from the car and then struck by a second vehicle. She died at the scene.
Police say James was not wearing a seatbelt.
Two other passengers, a male and female, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Alcohol and drugs don't appear to factors in the crash but the driver did have a restricted driver's license, according to police.
Northbound I-75 at Newport Road was closed until 3 a.m. as police conducted an investigation, but has since reopened.
