Teen Killed By Car Driven By Off-Duty Trooper
IONIA TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a car driven by an off-duty Michigan State Police trooper struck two teens, killing one, in Ionia County.
The Sentinel-Standard in Ionia says 16-year-old Zachary Barber would have been a sophomore at Ionia High School. He and 14-year-old Donald Proctor were hit Tuesday while pushing a motor bike on the side of a two-lane road.
Proctor was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital. The name of the off-duty trooper was not released.
The school year doesn't start until next week, but officials say counselors are available for Ionia students who are grieving.
The trooper will be placed on administrative leave, pending investigation of the accident. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
