Teen Jailed In Hit-And-Run Death Of Woman Watering Flowers In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 19-year-old man is being held in connection with the death of an elderly Detroit activist who died after she was hit by a car 4th of July weekend.
Police say 83-year-old Charlotte Kish was tending to flowers in the grassy median of Outer Drive, near Mound and Ryan roads, on Sunday when a Buick lost control and rear-ended a Chrysler, then slamming into a pickup truck near Kish.
Kish was thrown on impact, and died from her injuries, police said, while the driver of the car that caused the accident fled the scene.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's office said it's reviewing a warrant request for the young suspect, who remained in custody on Wednesday after turning himself in to the 11th Precinct Tuesday morning. His name has not been released.
Kish, who was known for her efforts to keep part of the city litter-free, participated in a number of demonstrations as a member of the Raging Grannies — an international activist network.
Nancy Goedert, a fellow member of the group, says that Kish was "just a very vital, loving, giving, super person."
The Detroit Free Press reports Kish was a retired Madison Heights librarian who'd planted flowers in that median for about three decades.
A candle vigil will be held for Kish on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Fenelon and Outer Dr. There's also a Facebook effort to bring people together to plant flowers in her honor on Sunday from Deen St. to Mound.
