Teen Gets 10 Days For Crash That Injured School Worker
HOWELL (WWJ/AP) - A 16-year-old Livingston County boy who was high on inhalants when his vehicle struck a security officer in his school parking lot has been sentenced to 10 days in juvenile custody and probation.
The teen, who lives in Brighton, pleaded guilty Oct. 22 to operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing injury, and possession of marijuana.. He was charged as a juvenile and was sentenced Monday to detention, probation, 200 hours of community service and counseling.
The Livingston County Sheriff's Department said charges stem from a crash on May 15 at Hartland High School in Hartland Township, about 40 miles northwest of Detroit.
Officials say the teen sprayed a household product from an aerosol can into a rag and passed out after inhaling it. His vehicle reportedly traveled through the intersection, over a curb and through a field, where it sideswiped a tree before coming to a stop.
Along the way, the teen's vehicle hit 53-year-old Susan Hazzard, who was directing traffic in the school's parking lot, crushing her spine and causing closed head injuries. She spent three months with a neck brace.
The sheriff's department was initially told the teen dropped something on the floor in the car and bent down to get it but hit the gas pedal instead.
The teen was expelled from Hartland school district.
