Teen Dies After Crashing Stolen Vehicle Into Tree

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a 16-year-old was killed when the stolen vehicle he was driving slammed into a tree on Detroit's east side.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. Friday on Holcomb Street, just south of Gratiot near I-94.

WWJ's Bill Szumanski was over the scene in the WWJ 950 Chopper.

"The only thing that makes sense is that the car went sideways into a tree and bounced off. The windshield is laying about 20 feet in front. The two front doors, one of them is in the street and the other is on the other side of the sidewalk in somebody's front lawn," said Szumanski.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Vickie Thomas described the accident as horrific, saying the vehicle was barely recognizable.

Officials say the engine of the vehicle actually ended up the young driver's lap. The driver, identified by his mother as Tyrone Lamb, was declared dead at the scene. Three other teenagers were in the vehicle, including two who were taken to the hospital in critical condition and one who was able to walk away from the accident.

Lamb's mother also identified one of the teens in critical condition as her nephew, Erijah Lamb. Identities of the other two teens have not yet been released.

The vehicle was reportedly stolen out of Warren.
