Tech Upgrade Blocks Some BrightHouse Data Customers
An upgrade required to bring Oakland County customers of Bright House networks faster data speeds and more cable TV channels knocked some of its customers off the Internet Thursday morning.
Bright House spokeswoman Leigh A. Byrd said the upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 platform -- necessary to offer high-speed Internet of up to 40 megabits per second -- started about 1 a.m. Thursday and was complete by 1 p.m. (DOCSIS stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, an international telecommunications standard that permits the addition of high-speed data transfer to an existing cable TV system.)
"Customers may have experienced interruptions of service during this time," Byrd said. She said the entire system was never out during that period.
She said all customers should have been back up and running by Thursday afternoon.
The company didn't disclose the number of customers affected.
In Oakland County, Bright House serves Farmington, Farmington Hills and Novi with cable TV, high-speed Internet and competitive phone service.
