Police Seek Suspect In Hit & Run That Killed Officer

Dan Kromer

Taylor police are seeking the public's help in identifying the driver of a vehicle that struck a Taylor officer who was assisting a motorist on the I-94 Freeway and then fled the scene.

The incident occurred at around 9 p.m.  Tuesday, on the shoulder of westbound I-94 at Monroe in Taylor.

Police said Lt. Dan Kromer, a volunteer officer, was providing assistance to a motorist whose vehicle had stalled when the officer and the idled car were struck by a white car described as a possible late 1990s or early 2000 model Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis or similar model.

The hit-and-run vehicle fled west on I-94 and exited at U.S. 24, Telegraph Road.

Taylor Police are mourning the loss of Lt. Dan Kromer, a 20-yr veteran.  Chief Dale Tamsen tells WWJ the tragedy happened just six weeks after the shooting death of Corporal Matt Edwards July 23rd, the first Taylor officer to be killed in the line of duty.

"To have the same thing happen again -- another very tragic incident -- it's just devestating, abosultely devestigating to the police department," Kromer said.

Kromer said the vehicle they are looking for will have heavy front-end damage and possibly passenger-side damage.   The vehicle is believed to have damage to the passenger-side headlight, turn signal and windshield. The car also could have maroon paint that transferred from the stalled car to the hit-and-run vehicle upon impact.

A witness told police that the car had a Michigan "sunset-style" license plate.

The driver of the stalled vehicle was not injured.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Taylor Police Department at (734) 287-6611.
