Tanker Spills Hundreds Of Gallons Of Fuel In Oak Park
OAK PARK (WWJ) - A popular intersection in Oak Park has reopened Tuesday morning after a tanker delivering fuel to a gas station Monday clipped a valve and spilled hundreds of gallons of gas on the roadway.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reports police and fire crews are still on the scene after working through the night at the Marathon gas station on Greenfield near 11 Mile Road.
Gary Shore, with the Oakland County hazmat team, told WWJ's Sandra McNeill that they are still calculating the exact number of gallons spilled.
Shore said he estimates that hundreds of gallons spilled and that they went into the sewer system.
"The biggest fear is that gasoline is flammable and now it is in a sewer, in a confined space, those flammable levels build up. The ... fear is that those gasoline vapors would find a source of ignition and we'd have a large fire in the sewer system," said Shore.
Shore said the surrounding buildings could be impacted as they connect to the sewer system. He said they are conducting air monitoring as well.
