Tanker Left Dangling From Overpass After Interstate Crash

ST. LOUIS (WWJ/AP) - A tanker truck was left dangling from its back wheels with the cab resting on the road below when it crashed and rolled over the edge of an interstate overpass at the heart of downtown St. Louis.

Local TV station KMOV reported that emergency crews who rushed to the scene of the crash on Interstate 44 at Washington early Thursday were able to lower the vehicle to the ground below.

There was a heavy emergency response to the scene, but officials said the driver — who was able to get out of the truck — suffered only minor injuries.

The crash closed the Eads Bridge in both directions backing up traffic for miles. It was unclear how long the bridge would remain closed as crews worked to get the truck off the highway. There was concern, according to reports, about leaking fuel as well as about the structural stability the truck.

It is unclear at this time what lead to the crash.

St. Louis police didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment from The Associated Press.
