Tampa Bay Tops Detroit 4-2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WWJ/AP) - Justin Verlander went six innings but allowed six hits and four runs as the Detroit Tigers fall to the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 on Friday night.
As heard on 97.1 The Ticket - Delmon Young hit a solo shot to left center off Tampa's David Price but Desmond Jennings homered twice off of Verlander.
The Tigers (37-40) fall to three games below .500 with the loss to the Rays.
Price outpitched Verlander to become the AL's first 11-game winner with the Tampa Bay victory over Detroit.
The Rays beat the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner for the second time this season, ending a four-game skid in which they played sloppy defense and struggled to score runs.
Price (11-4) allowed two runs and five hits before leaving the game because of what the Rays described as lower back tightness after seven innings. The hard-throwing lefty threw 78 pitches, struck out seven and walked one.
Price has won three straight decisions, five of six overall - the lone setback coming when the Rays were one-hit by R.A. Dickey on June 13.
