SWAT Teams, EMS Respond To Mock University Shooting
WARREN (WWJ) - SWAT teams and armored vehicles were out in Macomb County on Tuesday — but it's nothing to worry about.
Medics responded to victims with phony gunshot wounds, scrapes and cuts during a shooting simulation at Davenport University in Warren.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting reported the hours-long training excercis gave emergency response teams from five Macomb County communities an opportunity to hone their skills.
As SWAT teams searched for "the gunman," nurses questioned volunteer "victims" at the scene.
"What's your name? Do you know what today is? Do you know what the date is?" one nurse asked a woman who was made up to look like she had head injury.
"Not only does it allow our SWAT teams and our police department to respond to a situation with an active shooter," said Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green," but it exercises and put stress on dispatchers. It puts stress on the hospital system in the area, and it puts stress on the fire department, and on our civilian volunteers ...
"We go in there and we learn from our mistakes, and we learn from the things we do right," he said.
Green said it also helps the community to know that first responders are conducting these training exercises.
