Suspicious Substance Found At Detroit Police Precinct
DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit police precinct was evacuated on Wednesday after mail was opened that contained a powdery substance.
A police spokesperson said HAZMAT and fire crew were investigating the suspicious substance at the Detroit Police Department's Schaefer Station, near Grand River on the city's southwest side.
Police personnel and prisoners were evacuated for several hours but all have since been allowed back into the building.
Detroit Police Inspector Don Johnson said it's too early in the investigation to make a guess as to the sender's intent. He said there was no return address on what was an ordinary, business-sized envelope.
"But we do have some things going on right now that will hopefully give us an indication as to where this particular letter came from," Johnson said.
The officer who opened the letter was quarantined. He and two others underwent a cautionary decontamination.
However, Johnson said the HAZMAT crew and bomb squad determined the substance was not dangerous.
No one was injured.
The FBI, Detroit police, and Homeland Security are investigating.
