Suspicious Package Shuts Down Woodward In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Wayne County Sheriff's deputies were called to the Hannan House at around noon Thursday on a report that someone had placed a "suspicious package" into a dumpster behind the building.

Hammamn House is located on Woodward Avenue near Warren, in the Midtown cultural district which includes the Detroit Institute of Arts and Wayne State University.

Several buildings were evacuated and Woodward was closed in the area.

Sheriff Benny Napoleon said a K-9 investigation revealed some of the items found in a duffel bag could have been used to make a bomb.

"When the K-9 came and went to the dumpster, the K-9 set -- which is an indication that there was something suspicious in that dumpster," Napoleon said. "We then waited for the DPD bomb unit to come in.

"They x-rayed the package and determined that there wasn't any type of explosive device," he said.

The sheriff's office will be reviewing security videos to identify a suspect as an investigation continues.
