Suspicious Package Found Near Ambassador Bridge
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Ambassador Bridge was temporarily closed, early Wednesday evening, after a "suspicious package" was spotted near the duty-free shop.
An explosives disposal unit was called to the scene to x-ray the package which was found near the entrance to the Canadian side of the bridge.
Windsor police later said the package, reportedly some kind of safe, was found to contain nothing dangerous. No one was hurt.
Talking to WWJ Newsradio 950, a Windsor police spokesperson said the bridge would be completely shut down for only about 20 minutes.
Traffic on Huron Church Road was being diverted as a precaution and backups were reported in the area following the incident. Police were asking drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area if possible, and those headed across the border were advised to use the Tunnel for the time being.
The bridge reopened before 7 p.m.
It was not immediately clear who left the safe near the bridge or why. An investigation continues.
