Grenades Cause Scare At Detroit Precinct
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit's Eastern District police station was briefly evacuated and a portion of Gratiot was shut down, Thursday, after two women walked into the building with two hand grenades in a blue paper bag.
WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Detroit Police Commander Steve Dolunt who said the grenades could have caused a lot of damage had they gone off.
"It's my understanding that a grenade is good up to 300 meters. So, we had to evacuate, I would say, a block either way. If they had gone off... there could have been injuries," Dolunt said.
Dolunt said the women found the grenades in a closet while they were cleaning out their father's home after his death. Their dad was a World War II veteran.
"There was no malicious intent. She was just trying to get them out of her house, and I don't blame her," Dolunt said.
No one was hurt. The precinct and the street have since reopened.
