Suspects Remain Hospitalized After Carjacking, Fiery Crash
WARREN (WWJ) - Police say two suspects who carjacked a man while he was pumping gas remain hospitalized after leading officers on a chase that ended in a fiery crash.
The situation started to unfold around 6:15 a.m. Sunday when a 38-year-old Eastpointe man was pumping gas at the 7-Eleven on 9 Mile and Schoenherr roads in Warren. The man told police he was approached by two subjects who produced a handgun and demanded his keys, wallet and cell phone. The man complied and the suspects fled the scene in the victim's blue 2005 Cadillac CTS.
Warren police officers were on patrol around 12:38 a.m. Monday when they saw the stolen Cadillac, occupied by two people, in the area of 8 Mile Road and Dequindre Street. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspects drove away.
Officers gave chase but lost sight of the Cadillac in the area of Woodward and Manchester in Highland Park. Officers eventually located the Cadillac, which had collided with another SUV. According to police, the Cadillac struck a light pole and caught on fire.
Two suspects trapped inside the Cadillac had to be extricated from the vehicle with the jaws of life before being transported to the hospital. Both suspects, a 21-year-old and 19-year-old from Detroit, were last listed in serious condition.
The driver of the SUV also suffered a broken leg in the crash.
