Suspected Serial Rapist Due In Court On Murder Charge
DETROIT (WWJ) - A suspected serial rapist will be back in court Thursday, this time for allegedly causing the death of a 17-year-old girl.
Nineteen-year-old Daraian Winfield is expected to be arraigned in 36th District Court on three new charges, including first degree murder.
Prosecutors say Winfield is accused of breaking into a house in the 5500 block of Radnor on the morning of January 7 and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl.
The young woman later died from injuries she sustained during the attack.
In a separate case out of Detroit, Winfield is facing a charges of home invasion with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct for an incident that happened December 30 at a home on the east side. The victim testified during a district court hearing that she used a stun gun to escape the attack. After being hit and stabbed in the chest while fighting him off, the 39-year-old woman said that she'd recognized Winfield as being from the neighborhood. She told the court how she tricked him, saying she wanted to be sure her daughter wasn't home, which allowed her to reach for her stun gun. After she "lit him up," she ran across the street to her sister's house and called police.
In yet another case, this one out of Grosse Pointe, Winfield is charged with assault with intent to murder for allegedly attacking a woman who was walking in the area of Mack and Cadieux.
Police said tips led to Winfield's arrest Jan. 8 after a sketch of a suspected serial rapist was released to the media.
