Suspected Freeway Shooter Will Get 2nd Psych Exam
NOVI (WWJ/AP) - Alleged I-96 shooter Raulie Casteel will undergo an independent psychiatric evaluation after his lawyer was granted a delay in the case.
Defense attorney Doug Mulkoff told an Oakland County Circuit Judge that he was in the process of arranging the evaluation for Casteel, who was found in a previous exam to be competent to stand trial, but suffering from a delusional disorder.
The Wixom man faces 60 charges, including attempted murder, linked to shootings in Commerce Township and Wixom.
Two dozen random shootings occurred last fall in a four-county area. One man was hurt. In a separate but related case, the Michigan Attorney General's Office is prosecuting Casteel, a 43-year-old unemployed geologist,on terrorism and other charges in Livingston County.
Authorities haven't said what they believe is the motive behind the two-dozen shootings that took place along a 100-mile I-96 corridor Oct. 16 through Oct. 18, then stopped until Oct. 27 when a man was shot in the backside while driving on I-96 near the Fowlerville exit. He was the only person injured.
A new pre-trial date in the Oakland County case was set for May 30.
