Suspect On The Loose After Leading Police Chase

DETROIT (WWJ) - Officials from multiple jurisdictions are searching for a man who took off on foot after leading police on a lengthy chase.

The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning when police spotted a vehicle they thought had been used in a robbery near Campbell and Hupp avenues in Warren, in a neighborhood near 9 Mile and Hoover roads.

Police say the driver fled when officers attempted to stop the vehicle. The officers gave chase for about 30 minutes, until the vehicle stopped at Mt. Elliot and Miller streets in Detroit -- not far from the GM Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant. At that point, the suspect got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

Authorities combed the neighborhood but found no signs of the suspect. Police say they know who they are looking for, they don't believe he is armed, and they are trying to issue a warrant for his arrest.

Investigators say it turns out the man's vehicle wasn't used in a robbery, as officers initially had thought. It's unclear why the suspect continued to flee from police.

Two passengers in the vehicle were taken into custody at the scene.

An investigation is ongoing.
