Suspect In Brutal 2008 Attacks Captured In India, Arraigned On Murder Charges In Michigan
NOVI (WWJ) - UPDATE: Sunday May 26: Nerusu was arraigned Sunday on three counts of felony murder.
A former Novi resident is back in Michigan having been brought back to face charges in the alleged murders of his wife and two children almost five years ago.
Novi Police Chief David Malloy says 46-year-old Lakshminivasa Nerusu fled to India after allegedly bludgeoning his family to death.
It is alleged that Nerusu killed his wife, 14-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son at the Wexford Townhomes in 2008.
"We found just a brutal crime scene where several instruments had been used to not only bludgeon but cut these individuals so we spent several hours processing that crime scene and then worked backwards in tracking where Mr. Nerusu was because he was the only family member not present," said Chief Malloy.
Nerusu was arrested in India a few months ago and arrived in metro Detroit Saturday morning.
"According to some of the sources we've talked to, he's been living on the street and literally been homeless for a period of time," said Malloy.
"This helps bring closure to not only the remaining family members , but it also brings closure to, to many of the officers & detectives who actually worked on this case because of the brutality of it, so we're just, we're pleased that we're gonna be able to move on to the next step of the judiciary process."
The police chief said Nerusu was caught in India because Novi police worked relentlessly with the FBI and State Department officials in India.
Nerusu is set to be arraigned Sunday.
If convicted Nerusu faces life in prison for three counts of first degree murder.
