Suspect In Alleged Sex Assault At Church Preschool Was Volunteer
TROY (WWJ) - Leaders at a Troy church say the person accused of sexually assaulting a child at its preschool is a volunteer who has since been let go.
That information was revealed Thursday at St. Augustine Lutheran Church, where police and other officials met to address the media.
Richard Gady, chair of the board of directors for the preschool, said they ended the person's involvement with the church once they received information about the alleged sexual assault of a child at the end of May.
"The individual named as the suspect in this complaint is no longer involved with the preschool. We ended that person's involvement immediately," he said.
Gady indicated that the alleged suspect was not part of the staff, but a volunteer. He said the alleged assault likely occurred years ago.
"Parents involved in the preschool have been contacted and advised of the ongoing investigation," he said.
Troy Police Captain Robert Redmond said because of the law they can't say much about the case.
"It's a fresh investigation that's just begun. You know how difficult it is for me to stand here and try to answer questions I can't answer on an investigation that just began? This will be a lengthy investigation," he said.
Police launched the investigation last month with Child Protective Services after they were contacted by a parent.
Investigators are asking for those who may have information about the case to come forward.
