Suspect Faces May Trial In U-M Med Student's Death
ANN ARBOR (WWJ/AP) - A judge has scheduled a May 19 trial for one of two suspects in the fatal shooting of a University of Michigan medical student during a break-in at his Ann Arbor fraternity house.
Washtenaw County Judge Archie Brown on Wednesday set the date for 20-year-old Joei Jordan, who's charged with an open count of murder and home invasion. A second suspect, 21-year-old Shaquille Jones, faces a pre-trial hearing next week on the same charges.
Paul DeWolf, an Air Force Second Lieutenant, was found dead July 24, 2013 in his apartment at the Phi Rho Sigma medical fraternity house on North Ingalls Street. Police said the 25-year-old died from a gunshot wound to the neck during a robbery gone wrong. A video game system was taken and later sold for $80, according to police.
Jordan and Jones were arrested in November in their native South Carolina.
A $10,000 reward was offered for information in the case. Ann Arbor police were helped in their investigation by the University of Michigan Police, the United States Marshals Service, the United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations, the FBI and the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office.
Paul DeWolf, a native of Schoolcraft in southwestern Michigan, was a 2010 graduate of Grand Valley State University and had planned to graduate from medical school next year. The night before his body was found, his family said he was studying for a surgery he was planning to participate in and was texting his sister, Rebekah.
