Suspect Charged In Murder Of 91-Year-Old Detroit Man
DETROIT (WWJ) - A suspect has been charged in connection with the brutal murder of a 91-year-old Detroit man.
George Steward, 17, of Detroit has been charged with the murder of Paul Monchnik.
Detroit police and firefighters were called to a fire at Monchnik's home on Bentler Street in Detroit early Monday morning.
The victim was discovered with severe burns all over his body and a head injury. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. It is alleged that Stewart fatally assaulted Monchnik, and set his house on fire.
According to police, Monchnik was beaten during a robbery inside his home. To cover up the crime, police said the suspect went to a nearby gas station before returning to Monchnik's home with a gas can and setting it on fire.
The suspect also stole Monchnik's van, police said.
Monchnik's vehicle has since been recovered, with a gas can inside, according to police. It appears the vehicle was the only thing stolen from the residence.
