Super Bowl Partying Could Be To Blame For Increase In Drunk Driving In Ferndale
FERNDALE (WWJ) - Police in Ferndale say Super Bowl partying could be the reason for an increase in drunk driving arrests this past weekend.
From the early morning hours of Saturday until 12:55 Tuesday morning, Ferndale Police arrested eight people for drunk driving.
Two of the arrests were for felony drunk driving. Both felony arrestees had extremely high blood alcohol levels and extensive driving records.
In the first felony arrest, police say 39-year-old Kevin Spates of Detroit was pulled over near 8 Mile Road and St. Louis for having an improper license plate. Breath tests showed Spates had a blood alcohol level of .34 and .35.
Police say Spates has had his driver's license suspended 31 times, four prior convictions for driving while license suspended and two prior convictions for operating while intoxicated.
In the second felony arrest, police say 50-year-old William Rhodes of Detroit was pulled over after he was observed swerving on Woodward near Oakridge. He was given breath tests with results of .33.
Police say Rhodes has had 16 suspensions of his driver's license, five prior convictions for driving while license suspended and three prior convictions for drunk driving.
The cases are being submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office.
