Suicide Bomber's Michigan ID Remains A Mystery
LANSING (WWJ/AP) - The Michigan secretary of state's office says it hasn't been contacted by the CIA, FBI or another agency about the Michigan driver's license carried by the suspected suicide attacker in a bombing of a bus carrying Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.
Michigan Department of State spokeswoman Gisgie Gendreau said that even though the office hasn't heard from law enforcement agencies, it is "ready to assist in whatever capacity is needed."
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov says the Michigan license carried by the suspected suicide attacker was a fake.
Borisov said "we worked on this with colleagues from the FBI and CIA. They said that there is no such person in their database." Michigan is home to one of the largest Arab communities in the U.S.
CBS News and the Associated Press reported Thursday that a lanky, long-haired man wearing a baseball cap and plaid shorts was carrying that phony license as carried out a deadly suicide attack on a bus full of Israeli vacationers, according to Bulgarian officials.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed the attack on Iranian-backed Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shiite Muslim guerrilla group, and threatened retaliation.
Seven people - five Israelis, the Bulgarian driver and the bomber - died in the blast Wednesday.
