Study Tackles Questions About Aspirin For The Elderly
Does an aspirin a day keep age-related problems at bay? A large study in the United States and Australia is enrolling thousands of elderly participants in a 5-year study.
Doctors say many Americans are self-medicating on an aspirin regimen, because they've simply heard that it's good for you. "We do have patients who will come in and ask us about the study and then they'll tell us that their sister says they should be on aspirin," said Dr. Abraham Thomas of Henry Ford Hospital.
"In reality, that's about the level of proof that we have [that an aspirin regimen works], because we don't have medical proof. So, we do have a lot of opinions from people who say their family of friends say they should take an aspirin, but we don't have the medical proof," he said.
