Study: New Way To Control Blood Sugar, Cholesterol
DETROIT (WWJ) - Think about this: It might be time to swap out that daily bagel.
Canadian researchers found that making a simple substitution can help people with type two diabetes better control their sugar and cholesterol levels.
In the study, people with type two replaced some of their usual carbs with a half-cup of mixed nuts per day. After three months, the participant's blood sugar and bad cholesterol levels dropped.
Researchers think the unsaturated fats are responsible. The study's authors say their findings don't mean nuts are the key to the diabetes control, but it's more evidence they can be part of a healthy diet.
Portion control is key. One serving of nuts is considered to be an ounce - that's about 25 almonds or 14 walnut halves. Remember that unsalted, raw nuts are the best.
