Study Links Induced Labor To Increased Risk Of Autism
DETROIT (CBSDETROIT) - A new study links a common intervention during childbirth to an increased risk of autism.
University of Michigan and Duke University researchers found pregnant women whose labors are induced or augmented with drugs may have an increased risk of having children with autism, especially if the baby is male reports WWJ Health Reporter Sean Lee.
Study author Marie Lynn Miranda says three possibilities are behind the link.
Something during delivery that prompts intervention, something connected to the drugs used, or she says, "there's something about the underlying pregnancy, that, leads to the need for induction or augmentation. There's some underlying conditions in the pregnancy."
Miranda says they'll work to identify that factor in future research - digging deep into medical records.
