Study: Introducing Solid Foods To Baby Between 4-5 Months Ideal
DETROIT (WWJ) - New research on when's the right time to introduce solid foods to babies. University of Colorado researchers found babies given solid foods before 4 months and after 6 months of age had a higher risk of developing type-1 diabetes.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends starting solids between 4 and 5 months old. Cleveland Clinic Pediatrician Deb Lonzer tells WWJ's Health Reporter Sean Lee more about the benefits.
"Solid foods are going to be lower in good nutrition but maybe higher in calories," said Dr. Lonzer. "So there is a chance we're causing more obesity in babies, it can cause allergies or eczema - there may be a link to diabetes."
The study also found babies who were breastfed while being introduced to solid foods had a lower risk for diabetes.
