The OCC Early Childhood Development Program has undertaken an extensive redesign for this fall, including a new title – "Early Childhood Education" (ECE).
Changes include the introduction of new courses that strengthen the program's educational content and include student learning outcomes, according to ECE Program Coordinator Tiffany Wright-Ofeimu.
Early Childhood Education is currently completing a self-study that will lead to accreditation with the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and down the road, to articulation agreements with four-year schools that offer early childhood bachelor's degrees and teacher certification programs such as Rochester College, Madonna, Marygrove and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
The OCC program is growing and currently enrolls about 400 students according to Ofeimu. "Our classes fill with 27 students and we run about five or six sections per year – there is huge demand for trained personnel in the field," she says.
