Southfield (CW50) - This week on STREET BEAT, our host Amyre Makupson sits down with Barbara Hawkins, Manager and Children's Librarian at the Chaney Branch of the Detroit Public Library, to discuss the programs offered that encourage reading.

Next, Amyre interviews Michigan State University Professor of Journalism and Founder of Shady Ladies Literary Society Amy Haimerl about the importance of the written word and benefits of giving women a voice and a stage.

In the third segment, she interviews sisters Zena and Mena Nasiri about their non-profit organization Girls of the Crescent, established to empower Muslim girls through books.
