Stormy Summer In Michigan
Mother Nature is flirting with history in Michigan.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service say there have been 12 tornadoes this year in southeastern Michigan, including two that touched down in Macomb County August 19th. The number of tornadoes is the sixth most for any year going back to 1950.
The two Macomb County twisters also pushes the state total to 25 which is the most tornadoes for Michigan since 2001 when there were 35 tornadoes across the state.
Here are the years and highest number of tornadoes in SE Michigan:
1973-- 20
1974-- 19
2004-- 16
1997-- 14
1988-- 13
1984, 1986, 2010-- 12
1975, 1990-- 11
1976, 1977, 2001, 2007--- 10
Meantime, cleanup from last Thursday's storms is ongoing.
A few facilities remain closed due to downed trees or lack of electricity at Stony Creek Metropark.
The Trolley Trails and part of Oakgrove Picnic Area remain closed due to downed trees. Restrooms on the west side of the park are without electricity and are closed. Baypoint Beach is open for swimming, but the beach concession building, restrooms and bathhouse do not have electricity and are closed. All other areas of the park are open.
Park officials now estimate as many as 500 trees were damaged throughout the park and that it may take more than a month to clean up all the damaged areas.
