Storm Damages Homes Throughout Metro Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - One area hard-hit by the summer storm that ripped through the metro Detroit area was West Bloomfield. Karen Kawer lives in the area of Middlebelt and Maple, and says the winds blew through quickly.
"I mean it's like something I've only seen on T.V., it's just unbelievable, my next door neighbors are not home and their tree is on their house," said Kawer.
Kawer says tree branches are littered all over her street, but she says none of the nearby power lines have fallen down.
WWJ's Gary Lundy reports from the Royal Oak and Clawson area.
"Driving in the area of Royal Oak in the 13 mile and Campbell area, I saw many downed trees and fire trucks responding to the problem at hand," said Lundy.
"In the Clawson area, near 14 mile road, traffic lights are out at Rochester and Main, police are directing traffic at the intersection, and responding to numberous reports of tree limbs and trees down. I noticed a huge tree that had fallen on top of a SUV," reported Lundy.
Speaking live on WWJ, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard says Pontiac, and the northern part of the Dream Cruise, were spared the worst of the storms.
"We did not get hit with the same type of severity in terms of wind, downed lines and trees that Royal Oak and south got hit with ..." said Bouchard.
Bouchard says areas in Royal Oak and Berkley were hardest hit, with power lines and trees down.
Mike Stone of our sister station 97.1 The Ticket describes the scene in West Bloomfield, in the area of Maple and Orchard Lake Roads.
"There are shopping carts all over the place, a lot of tree damage, some cars have their back windows blown out - not sure if it was just trees hitting them," said Stone.
