Stolen vehicle pursuit through Indiana, Michigan ends in fatal crash
(CBS DETROIT) - One man was killed, and another was arrested after a stolen vehicle pursuit through Indiana and Michigan ended in a crash early Sunday, officials said.
At about midnight on Sunday, Oct. 22, Cass County deputies were notified that officers from the Nappanee Police Department in Indiana were chasing a stolen vehicle from Elkhart County to Cass County, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Office.
Nappanee police stopped pursuing the stolen vehicle when they lost sight of it, and shortly after, a person who lived on Old 25 near Cassopolis Road in Mason Township reported that a car had crashed into a tree.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered the passenger, 49-year-old Adrian Smith of Elkhart, had died in the crash.
The driver had left on foot, but a Michigan State Police K9 unit responded, and the man was taken into custody. His identity will not be released until after he is arraigned.
Authorities say Smith was not wearing a seatbelt, and they believe drugs were a factor in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
Michigan State Police, Edwardsburg police, Nappanee police, and SEPSA Fire Authority assisted the Cass County Sheriff's Office at the crash scene.
