Stiff Bond Set In Melvindale Teen Sex Assault

One of three teens accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl at a Melvindale hotel last weekend faced a judge Monday.

The 17-year old Tra-von Hampton is charged, as an adult, with third degree criminal sexual conduct.  Bond was set at $20,000 cash, no 10 percent option.  If he posts bond, the teen will be tethered and under house arrest.

WWJ's Mike Campbell spoke Monday with Hampton's attorney, Robert Mullen.

"It just creates a further issue. Because here we have a highschool student who still does have a life going on. We had thing arranged with the school. He's been getting his homework," Mullen said.

"Obviously he's got bigger issues to deal with than school homework, but all of that now is being pushed aside. And now he's going to languish in Wayne County jail, waiting for this case to go through," he said.

Mullen Hampton's family can't post the bond right now, so it's likely his client will remain jailed until his next court date, which is two weeks away.

Prosecutors said that after attending the Melvindale High School homecoming dance last weekend, the girl went to a hotel room where she was provided with alcohol and allegedly sexually assaulted.

Officials are still investigating allegations that an adult reserved the room at the Comfort Inn hotel on Dix-Toledo Road, and also provided the alcohol.
