Sterling Hts. City Council Talk Budget Cuts And Layoffs
STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Sterling Heights City Council has begun a series of budget talks.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting reports, layoffs and job eliminations are part of the proposed spending plan for the coming year.
As the city works to remain financially sound, City Manager Mark Vanderpool is projecting even more layoffs for the next few years.
Twenty-nine jobs are expected to be eliminated in the proposed 2012/13 budget through attrition and 27 employees will be laid-off.
"Our fire-departments are affected, the police department, facility maintenance, engineering, supervisors are affected and it really covers a broad scope of service, frankly," said Vanderpool.
Others cost cutting steps include employee wage concessions and sharing of city services. The city will also look into the privatization of some services.
