Sterling Heights Meijer Store Evacuated Due To Reported Threat
UPDATE: Man Mentions ISIS, Leaves Bag Behind Causing Scare At Sterling Heights Meijer
STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - The Meijer store at 16 Mile Road and Van Dyke in Sterling Heights was evacuated Monday evening due to an "active incident," according to police.
Reports say a man referenced terrorism -- something about ISIS -- and left a bag behind. The man then took off from the store. Police say they could release more information later Monday evening.
WWJ Newsradio 950 listener Jennifer from Sterling Heights, who called the newsroom, said she was surprised wasn't able to get her shopping done.
"I was just about to go into Meijer, when I noticed the police presence all around...fire engine back behind the Sonic there. I went to try to see if I could park to go in, but I noticed the parking lot was pretty empty," she said.
"Looks pretty calm," she added. "Everybody's pretty calm."
An employee at the Starbucks across the street said the coffee shop filled up quickly with Meijer customers, following the evacuation, who said the were told there was a bomb threat.
As of 7 p.m., Sterling Heights police had released very little information and had not confirmed that.
