Steering Problem Leads To Chrysler Pickup Recall

Chrysler is recalling about 250 thousand Ram pickups from the 2008 to 2011 model years, because of an issue that could cause drivers to lose control of the vehicles.

The problem, says Chrysler spokesman Vince Muniga is with an issue that can cause wear on the tie rod in the steering assembly.

"The tie rod end on the left side, could break and cause a loss of directional stability and control," he said.

The problem is more acute at low speeds.

"Most of our data shows that this has been at a left hand turn, a full ninety degree left hand turn, and very, very low speeds," said Muniga.

The recall involves mostly larger Ram pickups, in the 2500 and 3500 series.  Most of the smaller 1500 pickups are not involved, Muniga said.  There are some exceptions, and owners of the involved pickups will get a notice in the mail.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been investigating this problem since receiving a dozen complaints from owners.

There have been some accidents, Muniga said, but they haven't been serious.

"There have been a few minor accidents, and I think one minor injury."
