State Trooper Shot During Routine Traffic Stop
SAGINAW (WWJ/AP) - A Michigan State Police trooper was wounded Friday in an early morning shooting in Saginaw.
WNEM reporter Aisha Howard said the incident happened around 2 a.m. Friday when two troopers pulled over two people in a vehicle during a routine traffic stop near the old Saginaw High School.
At some point during the stop 24-year-old Keontae Amerson opened fire, hitting one of the troopers in the neck and arm. They returned fire, shooting and killing the suspect.
The injured trooper, an 11-year veteran, was listed in stable condition at an area hospital.
What led to the stop in the city about 85 miles northwest of Detroit and what prompted the shooting wasn't immediately known.
The driver of the car, a 21-year-old Saginaw woman, was questioned and released.
The other trooper is a seven-year veteran. Both troopers are on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
No names have been released.
