Brown's Ban From Speaking In The House Leads To Performance Of "The Vagina Monologues"
LANSING (WWJ) - In the wake of the controversy over a state representative using the word "vagina" during a debate on the house floor, WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher reports that several female lawmakers and others will take to the steps of the state capitol Monday night.
The lawmakers will be performing the popular play "The Vagina Monologues" after being contacted by playwright Eve Ensler.
This comes about after State Representative Lisa Brown was banned from public speaking in the House after using the word vagina during a debate on a bill that puts new restrictions on abortion providers.
State Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer will be one of the performers.
"It's something that I think is really a story about women and our struggles and they go on even today in 2012 - even in the highest levels of state government. So very poignant right now here in Michigan," said Whitmer.
Whitmer says she's outraged that the house speaker took away Brown's freedom of speech because he didn't like the words being used. Brown, of West Bloomfield, will also take part in the Monday night performance.
