State Department Issues Travel Advisory For Japan
DETROIT (WWJ) - The U. S. State Department has issued a travel advisory for Japan after the earthquake and tsunami. Consul General of Japan in Detroit, Kuni Matsuda says more than half of the main island has been affected by the disaster.
"Unless you have a really, emergency business to do with Japan , I'd advise American citizens to follow the instructions from the State Department," says Matsuda.
"We continue to have aftershocks, but ,uh, size of aftershock also can be less and less , so government of Japan has already cancelled all of the tsunami warnings," Matsuda says.
With thousands feared dead in Japan, rescue operations are underway.
"United States air carrier Ronald Reagan arrived Saturday and military service may have been actively involved with rescue operations together with Japanese self-defense forces," Matsuda says.
Matsuda says they are helping Metro Detroiters get information on loved ones in Japan and their office is open Sunday and will remain open to continue to help.
