State Bill Aims To Protect Facebook Privacy
LANSING (WWJ) - A bill making its way through the Michigan Legislature would keep employers or schools from requiring people to reveal their passwords for Facebook or other social media accounts.
"The Social Network Account Privacy Act" has passed a House sub-committee. It now moves on to the full House for consideration.
Metro Detroiters speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950 Ron Dewey Tuesday said the issue raises a lot of questions.
"As an owner of a company, am I supposed to be concerned if that behavior could somehow spill over to my company?" asked one man. "We're living in a time and day today, seriously, you've gotta to do background check on everybody and on everything."
Some say asking for passwords is just one step too far.
"They know, they'd have a fight with me -- they just can't have anything that's secure. Anything that's secure, you can't have it," said a woman.
Others point out that there's enough information already available to those wanting it to make the battle for your privacy a lost cause.
