Starter Or Not, Denard Robinson's Improvement Should Benefit U-M

Michigan's Denard Robinson can now admit he essentially was a one-dimensional quarterback last season as a freshman backup.

Fellow sophomore Tate Forcier was the starter, and when Robinson entered the game, he was, well, fairly predictable.

"I was always thinking run," Robinson said recently.

Not surprisingly, Robinson is the Wolverines' top returning rusher from last season with 69 carries for 351 yards and five touchdowns.

But he also returns this season as the probable starter at quarterback for Michigan's season opener against Connecticut on Sept. 4 at Michigan Stadium. He's been in an open competition for the starting job with Forcier and freshman Devin Gardner, one that Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez has said is too close to call. Rodriguez said he likely won't inform the quarterbacks who's starting until the night before the game.
