Standoff Ends Peacefully In Sterling Heights
STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A barricaded gunman situation in Sterling Heights ended peacefully when a 21-year-old man surrendered to police after a three-hour standoff.
The incident started around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fieldstone Apartments on Schoenherr Road, just north of 14 Mile Road.
Police say they were called to the home to help a woman enforce a psychiatric commitment order against her son. When officers arrived on the scene, the mother told them her son had a gun and was making threatening comments.
Officers called in the special response team and the Michigan State Police bomb squad to help handle the situation. Police were able to talk the man out of the house around 7:30 p.m.
The man was taken to a psychiatric institution to be evaluated. Police say it's unlikely the man will face criminal charges in the case.
