Tuesday morning Detroit Lions QB Matt Stafford spoke to the media and the main theme of the conversation was his "ongoing" contract talks. Below are some of the more interesting words that Stafford had to say...
Does Stafford want a long term deal in Detroit?
Stafford: "Yeah I would love to! Obviously I love being here, I love this team and would love to bring a winner here, that's my number one focus this whole offseason, was trying to do everything that I could to help us win. The contract stuff will take care of itself; I'm honestly really not too involved in it. If something gets done then we will figure it out from there, I'm just working to get ready for the season."
Would Stafford say the talks are officially "ongoing?"
Stafford: "I would say that I guess, I don't know. I'm not in on the phone calls or anything like that but I'm sure there is some sort of talks going on."
Would Stafford rather have a record high deal or better players around him and get fair market value?
Stafford: "You want fair market value! I really don't care about breaking records too much; I want to break records on the field. I want to win games; I want to have as many good players around me as I possibly can. I'm a football first guy and the rest happens because that's the way it goes in this league and I understand that. I'm not too worried about that, I just want as many good players around me and help out anyway I can."
Does Stafford foresee the contract or lack of one becoming a distraction if it goes on too long?
Stafford: "I don't expect it to be a distraction! I personally don't want it to be. I like to focus on one thing and go after it and right now that's football for me. That's kind of why I'm letting agents talk to the front office here and figure that stuff out. I would imagine there would become a point where we are either getting it done or not but I would assume they would want to do something and I want to do something, we'll figure something out hopefully and if not then you know we will move on and table it for a year."
