Southwest Detroit Freeway Ramps To Open Friday
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's been months in the making, but another part of the Gateway Project in southwest Detroit has been completed.
The Michigan Department of Transportation announced on Thursday the freeway ramps from northbound and southbound I-75, and from eastbound I-96, leading to the Ambassador Bridge Plaza will open on Friday.
The project had been tied up in lawsuits and other legal challenges.
"The net benefit of speed and capacity to the Ambassador Bridge is an important outcome for the people, passengers and freight that utilize this vital economic artery," Detroit International Bridge Company President Dan Stamper said in a statement.
"Today is a day of celebration. While we will not thank the government for their efforts to damage our business during this project, the final completion of the highway ramp connections deserves a champagne toast. Like the re-decking project that was finished in the spring, and the many other major investments by the Ambassador Bridge in its facilities, these new ramps will ensure the Ambassador Bridge remains North America's number one border crossing."
A ceremony with state, local and federal officials is planned for 10:30 a.m Friday.
