Southfield Recycling Center Fire Fills Sky With Smoke
SOUTHFILED (WWJ/AP) - Black smoke filled the sky as a massive blaze burned at a recycling center in Southfield.
Flames were shooting from the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County building late Thursday afternoon.
WWJ Newsradio 950 received multiple tipster calls as listeners spotted thick black smoke before 6 p.m., in the area of 8 Mile Road and Evergreen.
Southfield acting Fire Chief Keith Rowley says workers saw flames coming from an area holding large bundles of recycled paper,
cardboard and plastics.
Rowley said high winds fed the fire and said firefighters were "surrounding and drowning" the blaze. WWJ's Sandra McNeil reported that crews seemed to be getting a handle on the fire by around 7 p.m.
There were no reports of injuries.
Receptacles at the center accept newspapers, magazines, boxes, plastic containers, computers and other electronics.
