Southfield Precinct Chair: "Turnout Was Awesome"
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Decent weather and a predicted tight presidential race brought a high voter turnout to polls all over metro Detroit.
Southfield voter Toi Bolden says the presidential race was the primary issue for her during this election, however some of the ballot issues were important to her too.
"It was an important election, and there were a few things on there; the collective bargaining was very important, I believe that people should have the right and an opportunity to collectively bargain," she said.
Jaquetta Miah is precinct chairperson for the polling station at Brace-Lederle School in Southfield.
"Turnout was awesome, it started at 5:30 this morning ... as ... you know, we could not let anyone in until 7 o'clock in the morning," Miah told WWJ's Pat Sweeting. "A lot of people were out for the presidential race."
Miah said that she saw a lot of young people coming in to vote and a lot of elderly as well.
She said for a lot of the young people coming out to vote, this was the first time they were eligible and their parents were making sure that they exercised that right.
Miah said that it's important for parents to lead by example and vote. "If the parents don't vote, what do you think the children will do?" she said.
