Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence To Kick Off Congress Run Soon
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ/AP) - Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence is getting close to formally kicking off a run for Congress against two fellow Democrats, U.S. Reps. Hansen Clarke and Gary Peters.
Lawrence hasn't made a formal announcement but is asking for support on her Facebook page.
She wrote Friday: "Send a woman to Congress! Detroit families are fighting for their economic survival and its time we stand up and say: Enough is enough!"
Lawrence told the Detroit Free Press she will formally announce her intentions on Feb. 1.
A new congressional map drawn by Republicans now has the 14th District stretching from Detroit to Pontiac, with Southfield right in the middle. Clarke is from Detroit, and Peters lives in Oakland County.
Lawrence was a candidate for lieutenant governor in 2010. She also ran for Oakland County executive.
